Home Sweet Home

After almost 3 weeks straight of traveling between Lubbock, Abilene, and Amarillo, I went back down south to my part of the state. I had an amazing time on those trips and met many wonderful people, but there’s nothing quite like going back home. I was excited to go back to where I grew up, New Braunfels, for the Comal County Fair and Rodeo. In addition to visiting my hometown this month, I also got to visit the place I consider my “second hometown,” College Station, since I’ve lived there for the past three years as a student at Texas A&M University. Trips like these made this month seem like one big homecoming for me!10698621_854485964569333_6204608978388755910_n

My first stop was back in the land of the Unicorns (that’s our high school mascot, not kidding :)) for the Comal County Fair and Rodeo. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that if it’s fair week in New Braunfels, it’s more than likely going to be a muddy weekend. And this year was no exception! As much as we love the rain, I’m not sure how much the contestants like bucking off in the mud or having their horses slosh around in it. I know the mutton busters weren’t big fans of having their feet stick into the mud like quicksand when they attempted to walk out of the arena. However, we made the most of the muddy weekend we were given and it turned out to be a very memorable and fun time for everyone!

In addition to the rodeo, I also got to ride with our 4-H club in the parade that the whole county closes down school for; we take our fairs and rodeos seriously! My mount for this parade was none other than my dad’s old team roping horse, Zipper, who was actually the first horse I ever showed when I was younger. It was pretty neat to think about everything that horse has been around for, from a girl that just enjoyed riding, to being a representative of the official sport of our state! Thank you to Jeff Oliver for letting me ride in the parade with y’all and always lending a helping hand. Thank you also to the pickup men for lending me a horse to use at the rodeo performances and to the Comal County rodeo committee for having me! It was great to be back home!

My next trip was to Seguin for the Guadalupe County Fair and Rodeo. This rodeo also holds some sentimental value for me since I used to show horses in that arena, including Zipper, when I was in 4-H growing up! I enjoyed getting to ride in the grand entry and help with the little mutton busters. I was also happy to help with the coronation of their Miss Round Up queens court.

Congratulations to the new court, I know y’all will have a fun year! Thank you to Mrs. Karen Llyod for all of the hard work she puts into this pageant and for hosting me while I was there. It was so good to visit with her again! Thank you to United Pro Rodeo for supplying me with a horse to ride and to the rodeo committee for working so hard to put on a great show!

Finally, I got to go back to Aggieland for the Brazos Valley Fair and Rodeo! Last year, I was on the rodeo committee for this event so I was excited to be back. I headed to the fairgrounds the first day for a celebrity mechanical bull riding competition the rodeo was hosting. TV and radio personalities from across the Brazos Valley came together to compete and it was a fun time watching all of them take on that “rank bull.” During the rodeo throughout the weekend, I had a great time getting to carry sponsor flags, push cattle out during the timed events, and help with the mutton bustin’. Not only did they have mutton bustin’ at each performance, there were so many mutton busters in the Brazos Valley that they would hold multiple rounds of just this event throughout the day! During those times, I was asked to announce and even sometimes judge the mutton bustin’ competitions! Apparently us rodeo queens can be pretty good multitaskers 🙂  Thank you to Cadillac Rodeo Company for letting me use one of their horses throughout the weekend and to Fiona Lockhart for putting on this wonderful event and for hosting me! Thank you also to Bobby and Judy Kurten, their daughter Jennifer, and everyone else on the rodeo committee for being so kind and helpful. I always enjoy my time spent with y’all!10690030_861029497248313_1961759831366966000_n

I have absolutely loved meeting so many new people throughout my adventures this year, but it’s still nice coming back to familiar places filled with familiar faces!

Blessings always,

Amarillo By Morning, Up From San Antone… Literally!

I left Abilene the last Saturday of the West Texas Fair and Rodeo so that I could drive back to San Antonio for my early flight to Amarillo Sunday morning. Many people ask if I get exhausted from all of the traveling I do as Miss Rodeo Texas, but I can honestly say that I LOVE it! Getting to go to so many places is a constant reminder of how truly blessed I am to even be in this position and I have cherished every single trip this year. So after an early start Sunday morning, my plane left San Antonio headed to Amarillo for the Tri State Fair and Rodeo. Once I arrived, I was greeted by Brenda Michael who so generously volunteered her time to pick me up from the airport, take me to lunch, and show me around the grounds of the Tri-State fair before the rodeo week began. I loved getting to visit with Brenda and hear about her family’s involvement in rodeo.10698568_842336989117564_991800282280456226_n

On Monday, I had a great time helping with the Mutton Bustin’ “slack” at the fairgrounds. Over one hundred kids were entered so it was a fun-filled evening of spending time with the little mutton busters and getting to know the rodeo committee I’d spend the week with. The next morning, I was interviewed at the local Amarillo TV station, News Channel 10. It was a great opportunity to promote the Tri-State Fair and Rodeo and the exciting Wrangler Champions Challenge that would be held the next day. The early morning show crew and hosts were so welcoming, they eagerly talked to me about my future goals to work in broadcast and I am very appreciative of that.10636308_842343355783594_3121486185816005902_n

The rodeo week kicked off with a bang on Wednesday, starting with the Wrangler Champions Challenge. I have never been to one of these events before so I had been looking forward to this night since I won my title! Wrangler Champions Challenges bring the top contestants and the top stock together for one night of incredible competition. You can’t find this kind of quality in one place at one time anywhere else except for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo itself. Our day started off with the contestant luncheon at the American Quarter Horse Association Hall Of Fame and Museum. Thank you to AQHA for hosting the event and for being such a significant sponsor for this rodeo and the PRCA in general!

10354071_846432998707963_4516768656242314378_nThe contestants checked in, drew their stock, and we had a great meal before heading to Cavenders for an autograph signing. It was nice getting to know some of the contestants while promoting the rodeo that night. Then it was time to head back to the grounds for the performance. I was honored to carry the American flag during the National Anthem everynight, it’s always a reminder of how much I love this sport and its patriotism. After the opening ceremonies, I was so grateful that the rodeo had me stay involved with the performance by pushing cattle during the timed events and carrying sponsor flags. Any extra time I can spend involved with a rodeo or on the back of a horse, I’m a happy girl! I truly loved getting to be a part of the Wrangler Champions Challenge and getting to be in the company of so many of the top cowboys and cowgirls in the world at such a prestigious event!10646842_842929099058353_2362433169479685382_n

The next morning, I arrived at the arena bright and early for slack. I really enjoyed getting to help push cattle out with Randy and spend the whole morning horseback on his cowy horses. I was also able to be involved with the steer roping on Friday morning which was a first time experience for me! I had never attended a steer roping in person before so it was neat to be right in the middle of it all, these contestants and their horses are real athletes!

10639403_846432932041303_6927130601922315442_nThe rest of the week, I got to participate in the Tri-State Fair and Rodeo every night by helping with the mutton bustin’ before each performance, carrying the American flag during the opening ceremonies, pushing cattle out during the timed events, and carrying sponsor flags. I loved every minute of this rodeo and the people I got to share it with! It was also great seeing other “rodeo royalty” throughout the week like Aubrie Fields ( Miss Rodeo Texas Princess), Kennady Johnson (Miss Texas High School Rodeo Association), Carolyn Benitez and Jade Kenney (Will Rogers Range Riders Rodeo Queen and Princess).

I would like to thank Randy for helping me throughout the rodeos and providing me with a trusty steed. He and his family were always so helpful which I really appreciated. I ended up spending 24 hours in the saddle throughout the week between slack and the rodeo, and those hours were well spent with his amazing horses! I would also like to thank Johnny and Alice Johnson for being so kind and hospitable during my stay in Amarillo, they have a wonderful family! Thank you to Brenda Michael for all that she does for the rodeo and for making sure I was well taken care of during my stay. Thank you also to Alex Bell, Angela Ragland, and the rodeo committee at the Tri-State Fair for all of the hard work that they do and for treating me so well. I absolutely loved everyone I got to work with in Amarillo and it has since then been one of my favorite experiences.

My West Texas Travels

The first weekend of September, I attended the 26th Annual National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration in Lubbock. This event strives to preserve our cowboy culture and the Western way of life, just like Miss Rodeo Texas! The weekend was filled with Western heritage from cowboy poets and musicians, to chuck wagon cooking, horses, and historical demonstrations. There really was something for everyone! During the day, I spent my time doing one of my very favorite things: interacting with kids! On Friday, we had school tours as busloads of children came to learn outside of the classroom. I loved getting to watch them have fun and I even got to participate! We listened to cowboy poets and musicians, watched an equine demonstration, and learned about a cowboy’s life on the trail. On Saturday, we set up an activity station for kids visiting the event. I always enjoy sharing our Western heritage with the younger generations and watching their excitement for our culture grow. 10628502_842331529118110_5855628311626227765_n

Both nights I spent at the event, I was honored to present the American Cowboy Culture Awards alongside Alvin Davis. Congratulations to Bob Bluthardt for the Western Museum Award and to Elizabeth Kesler for the Lifetime Achievement Award. Both of these individuals are very deserving of these prestigious achievements! I would like to thank Monica Hightower for inviting me to this wonderful event that she puts so much work into. Thank you also to Alvin Davis for being so kind, I really enjoyed visiting with him throughout the weekend.10649787_842331509118112_3564509065204917153_n

Once the celebration was over, I drove down to Abilene for the West Texas Fair and Rodeo. During the first night of the rodeo, the Miss West Texas Fair and Rodeo queen was crowned. Although I wasn’t there for the pageant since I was in Lubbock, I heard that all of the girls did a great job! They had a wonderful group of girls competing and I loved getting to spend the little time I did with them. Congratulations to Nikki Woodward on her new title, I know she will have an amazing year!

10696186_842335442451052_8723195203996480515_n

Throughout the rest of the week, Nikki and I had a lot of fun participating in the rodeo each night. We got to help with the calf scramble and mutton bustin’, in addition to our queen’s run at the beginning of each performance. Thank you to Beutler and Son Rodeo Company for supplying us both with horses to ride for the week. We definitely appreciated all of the help we had!

10407726_842335635784366_2898268731095241224_nWhile I was in Abilene, I was happy to interview with their local TV station, KTAB news. As an Agricultural Communications major wanting to pursue a broadcast career, I truly cherish these opportunities I have to learn more and be involved with that industry. I really appreciate them even thinking of me and having me on the show!  I also got to help with the Mini Hereford show during my time at the fair and rodeo. I enjoyed getting to meet new people, pass out ribbons, and spend time with Devin Felger Sisk who was photographing the livestock show. Devin was Miss Rodeo Texas 2009 and also a fellow New Braunfels Unicorn like me! I always love getting to visit with her and see a familiar face during my travels. Thank you for all that you do for the Miss Rodeo Texas organization, Devin! Thank you also to Rochelle Johnson for having me at the West Texas Fair and Rodeo and for being so hospitable during my stay there. I really enjoyed working with her and everyone else that makes this wonderful rodeo possible!10698423_842335492451047_1166605010706220042_n
