FALL Rodeo Fun

OVER THE EDGE, San Antonio

Since my trip to Amarillo, I have had the honor of meeting so many wonderful Texans and visitors to our beautiful state that it’s hard to know where to begin.

I wish you all could have been with me recently when I attended OVER THE EDGE, a Special Olympics Fundraiser.  This wasn’t your ordinary BBQ or black tie event… Not by any measure.

Katherine and Ashley at Over the Edge event

Two very special and courageous Texas Girls, Ashley and Katherine were two of the many participants that took the challenge to help raise over $45,000 for Texas Special Olympics by repelling down the side of the Milam Building on the Riverwalk in San Antonio and I had the honor of meeting and getting to know them both.  Katherine is a Houston Rodeo Fan and I look forward to seeing and riding with her at the rodeo this year.  OVER THE EDGE is a nationwide program that will host events in 4 Texas cities this year.  If you are interested in becoming a participant or sponsor, please check out Overtheedgeusa.com.  It’s a great organization!

COMAL COUNTY RODEO, New Braunfels

Texas has many small town rodeos and the Comal County Rodeo is famous for bringing in some awesome stock and talent!  This was my first time to attend and is one that I will remember forever for many reasons.  One reason, is the famous Leon Coffee.  This man is a rodeo legend and he certainly lived up to his reputation of being a great guy.  He is also a true gentleman and a show stealing entertainer, so I am glad that I finally got to meet him.

So excited to meet the legendary Leon Coffee

One of the events I really look forward to at a rodeo is the mutton bustin.  I can remember how excited and nervous I was when I did it as a little girl.  Even though I didn’t make it out of the chute before biting the dirt, I can relate to how much courage it takes to get on the back of that “rank sheep”!  These kids are the future of rodeo and it’s so great to see that the love and passion of rodeo is alive and well and still being passed on to the next generation!  Love live Cowboys… and CowGIRLS!

It was great to attend the Comal County Rodeo in beautiful New Braunfels and we didn’t let a little rain stop the fun! I’m happy to have added a few more awesome people, like Leon, to my rodeo family.  I look forward to seeing you soon Mr Coffee!

GUADALUPE COUNTY RODEO, Seguin

The Guadalupe County Rodeo in Seguin was like attending a Rodeo Family Reunion.  I absolutely loved seeing all the familiar faces of friends that I have met over the years as a Rodeo Queen competitor, during my years as a High School Rodeo contestant and across Texas at Rodeo’s this year.  What better place to meet up than a rodeo?!

I was also able to assist with the Crowning of the new Miss and Little Miss Round Up.  Thank you to Karen Lloyd for the Invitation and for allowing me to help out. A Big Congratulations goes out to my friend Carrie Wilbert for winning the title of Miss Round Up! (So proud of you girl!)

SAN ANTONIO LIVESTOCK EXPOSITION, Inc (S.A.L.E.)= Scholarships!

I have had the opportunity and honor of attending a few of the S.A.L.E. scholarship fundraising events recently, such as the “Casino Night” and the “GO RODEO Round Up”! As one of the recipients of the San Antonio Stock Show scholarship, it means so much to me to have a chance to meet some of the amazing SALE volunteers and thank them face to face!  I truly appreciate all of the long hours and hard work that goes into each of these events and I want to take this moment to publicly thank everyone involved.  This group not only hosts some fun San Antonio Social Events but they raise a tremendous amount of money (over $134 million to date) so that kids all across Texas can go to college and achieve their dreams.  I am truly proud and humbled to be counted as one of those recipients and I am honored to have the opportunity to give back!

LONE STAR WOUNDED WARRIORS Skeet Shoot, Rio Medina

Too many of our wounded service men and women are coming back to the states and attempting to face their challenges on their own.  Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston and The Lone Star Wounded Warriors Organization are trying to change that.  The LSWWO invited about a dozen recovering soldiers out to Rio Medina for a day of fun, recreation and a break from their daily rehab schedules.  These soldiers have faced unbelievable circumstances in defense of our freedom and the event organizers believe that free events like this are just one small way to begin to say “thank you for your sacrifice and we care!”.  One of the event sponsors, Lone Star Radiator hosted a live auction after the skeet shoot that raised more than $11,000 that will be donated to Veterans Outdoors which is a non-profit organization that hosts hunting trips for Wounded Warriors.  This is the fourth year Lone Star Radiator organized and recruited sponsors and volunteers to provide this outdoor activity for America’s heroes.

I am very thankful for Billy Harris of the Miss Rodeo Texas Board for his involvement with this organization.   I was honored to be invited to attend this event and meet these amazing warriors and the volunteers that made it all possible.  One of the volunteers, Mr. Eric LaBarge is also a wounded warrior himself and has an incredible story of survival and recovery.  He credits events like this for his ability to pick himself up and move forward.  As big as Mr LaBarge is – his heart is even bigger!  Just like the courage and hearts of the Hero’s we were celebrating and serving at this event.

This event was an "uplifting" experience in more ways than one!

If you know a veteran that could use some support, please share this organization with him/her and if you ever get an opportunity to attend a wounded warrior or Veterans Outdoors event I strongly recommend you do it.  These soldiers have earned all the support, encouragement and respect we can give.  Freedom isn’t free and these soldiers have paid more than their share of the cost, so please support them and check out www.veteran-outdoors.com.

NATIONAL COWGIRL HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS, Fort Worth

I am very blessed to know many strong women that I consider to be my mentors and hero’s.   I am even more fortunate to call some of these women family or friend.  Many of those women gathered recently at the Will Rogers Coliseum to celebrate the 2013 Inductees to the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame.  What an honor it was to be surrounded by women that I admire and respect… like Pam Minick, Kadee Coffman, Carolyn Seay Vitor, Patti Colbert, Sharon Camarillo, Shelly Burmeister Mowery and many many more. We recognized this years inductees: Dr. Eleanor Green (DVM) from Texas A&M, Mary Walker~ World Champion Barrel Racer, Cathy Smith~ Western Artist and Native American Designer and Lizzie Johnson Williams “Cattle Queen of Texas”.  Four amazing and deserving women and three of them are from Texas!

What an inspiration, Mary Walker was!

It was also great to see Chenae again and I think that she would agree with me… We all get to do many of the things that we love because of the work and efforts of the strong women that have bravely forged the trails ahead of us.  If it weren’t for organizations and events like the NCHOF and Museum we just might forget their sacrifices and take some of these things for granted.  The brave women in the museum and Hall of Fame have broken down barriers and raised the bar of expectation for all Women today!  So, if you have not had a chance to visit the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame – you are missing a historical treat!  Make plans today and remember to support them when you can!  I’m proud to be a YOUNG GUNS Member of the NCHOF!

You know, the more I travel this state, the more I’m convinced that Texas is the absolute BEST place in the world to live and Texans are the Best People around!  So, as I prepare for the Miss Rodeo America Pageant that takes place in Las Vegas, NV December 2-9th….  I couldn’t feel more blessed to wear this crown or more honored to represent this state.

God Bless Texas!

Amarillo by Morning….

Well I can certainly understand why George would include Amarillo in one of his songs… Amarillo has it all!!!

Flying into Amarillo on my favorite airline, Southwest, I could see miles and miles of Texas. I really do love how diverse and beautiful our state is! I have driven through Amarillo on many occasions, but this was my first opportunity to truly experience this unique West Texas Town as this time I had the opportunity and honor of attending the Tri-State Fair and Rodeo.   As with every appearance that I fly into, there are people that step up to assist, make arrangements and take time away from their family and lives to help me and help the rodeo. Amarillo was no exception.  There were so many that helped out, but I’d like to specifically thank Brenda Michael for picking me up, showing me around the fair grounds to get prepared for the week and getting me to my hotel.  She certainly set the tone for what turned out to be a fun filled week!

In addition to the great people affiliated with the Tri State Rodeo, I had the honor of working side by side with Chenae’ Shiner, the current Miss Rodeo America. We had an early morning TV interview and many appearances together during our week.  Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all work… We also had a lot of fun together!  For example, no visit to Amarillo is complete without a trip out to the famous “Big Texan” Steak Ranch. They give you a FREE 72 ounce Steak with sides if you can eat it in under an hour! Well, needless to say we didn’t take them up on the challenge but two people did while we were there! Marjorie and the Board can attest to the fact that I love a good steak, but I think this challenge gets the best of almost everyone!   Speaking of food… Mrs. Chris Williams (former Miss Rodeo America) and her husband, treated Chenae’ and I to one of Amarillo’s best kept secrets. We had the very best homemade desserts! They also took us out to the famous “Cadillac Ranch” where we could join the thousands of tourists and graffiti our names on the Cadillac cars that are sticking out of the ground. They sure know the way to a girl’s heart! Thank you both again!

Before the Fair and Rodeo kicked off, Chenae’ and I stopped by the American Quarter Horse Association Museum and Business Office. It was wonderful to get to meet everyone and I want to publicly thank them for taking time to give us a special tour. So much time and effort goes into each and every AQHA Show! If you own or love the American Quarter Horse or Show in this Association, you really should take the time to stop by and meet this amazing team. They work exceptionally hard to keep everything running smoothly and efficiently and I think they do a great job! After touring the business office we were able to walk through the Museum and Hall of Fame. It’s been about 10 years since I had been here so it was great to see how it has changed.   I love horses and I am always fascinated by the impact they’ve had on people’s lives, the development of our nation and internationally.   The American Quarter Horse is an amazing and diverse breed and although it is now found in places like China and Europe it will always be known and remembered as “America’s Horse”!

We kicked off the Tri-State Fair and Rodeo in Style!!! Amarillo is home to one of the new events in the PRCA this year, the Wrangler Champions Challenge. There are only 4 stops in this series and two of them are in Texas! We had a packed house to watch 10 of the World’s Top Cowboys and Cowgirls in each event compete. It was like watching a mini WNFR! Mike Mathis did a great job announcing in the arena and Keith Isley kept the crowd entertained during competitors and events. What a wonderful experience! The event will be aired on GAC TV Sept 29th at 5:00pm and again on Oct 5th at 9:00pm if you weren’t able to attend.   For more information about this special series you can go to prorodeo.com and click the Wrangler Champions Challenge link at the top of the screen.

Chenae’ and I were joined by our MRT Princess, Kate Johnson and Miss TJHRA Aubrey Fields for the week’s rodeo events. We were provided the best horses (and best jokes) by Johnnie Johnston and Randy Williams. The four of us helped push cattle, carry flags, help with mutton bustin and the calf scrambles. I am so proud of Kate and Aubrey! They are both awesome cowgirls and have a bright future ahead of them.

Chenae’ and I had an opportunity to do a little shopping, promote the Tri-State Rodeo and support Cavenders while we were there as well. We love western stores that support our lifestyle. Justin Boots, Wranglers and Cavenders! Love it! Cool Horse in Amarillo is another great place to shop for anything Western or Equine related that you need. Again, Amarillo has it all!!

I could sit here all day and list the great people I’ve met and that have had a part of this amazing journey – but let me just say this. “THANK YOU”! To all that have been a support in any way possible, please know that I appreciate you. To Chenae’, Thank you for doing a great job as Miss Rodeo America and for setting an amazing standard. I am glad that we had the week to get to know each other even better and I had so much fun hanging out with you!   To the Tri-State Fair & Rodeo Committee, y’all were simply amazing, put on an awesome Rodeo and I cannot thank you enough for inviting me and treating me like part of your family.

Once again, my Rodeo family has grown and the scrapbook is becoming filled with wonderful memories of this amazing year. I am truly blessed to be here but I couldn’t do it without all of you! Check back for more adventures soon!

Traveling the beautiful roads of Texas!

Tejas Rodeo

After traveling and being on the road quite a bit, it was really nice to be back in the arena for some serious saddle time.  A special thanks to Tejas Rodeo for allowing me to come out and ride in their awesome arena and work with their team.  I look forward to coming out again soon.

Speaking with some of the local royalty!

I was honored when I was asked to judge the Kendall County Queen Contest with two dynamite ladies that I respect very much, Karen Lloyd and Courtney (Warden) Billings (Miss Rodeo Texas 2000).  We had a great time getting to know the Kendall County Fair girls and taking a few moments to catch up in between events.  These are two very strong and capable women who give so much of themselves and have accomplished amazing things in their lives, so I felt privileged to be by their sides and have an opportunity to get to know them even better.

The Miss Kendall County Fair Contest has two age divisions and the girls made our job of judging very difficult.  They were all extremely capable of handling the job but as we all know, there can only be one winner and the SCFA has some great girls!  I am honored to have met all of these wonderfully talented, beautiful and intelligent girls and want to  Congratulate the winners! (Queen- Sterling Shrum, Princess – Tiffani Beck, Duchess- Emily Hare and Little Miss- Natalie Burkholder)

After judging the queen contest, I was very excited to be able to come back to attend the Kendall County Fair with the girls and have the opportunity to get to know them better.  Together we attended the open bull riding event as well.  The Kendall County Fair Committee and volunteers were awesome and welcomed me into their group with open arms!  I had so much fun being a part of this community event.   I want to thank Jenn with “Photos by Jenn” for taking some amazing pictures of all of us and allowing me to use them in this Blog and my scrapbook.  I appreciate you so much!

Cowboy Capital of the World…. Bandera Texas!

Recently, Bandera was officially declared the “Cowboy Capital of the World”!  What a privilege it was to be at their Labor Day celebration to commemorate this occasion with this awesome Texas community!

Bandera, Cowboy Capitol of the World Parade - Labor Day Weekend, 2013

Bandera, Cowboy Capitol of the World Parade – Labor Day Weekend, 2013

We started off the celebration as any good Texas town does – with a parade!  But the fun didn’t stop there…  Not in Texas!!!  The City of Bandera hosted a Circle of life PowWow, Mounted Shooters & Wild West Show in addition to streets filled with Arts, Crafts, Food, Music and good ole Texas Fun!  I’d like to extend a formal “Thank YOU” to Billy and Brenda Harris for providing me with a gorgeous palomino horse to ride.

It was an honor to be in the parade with Billy, Brenda and the Texas Heritage Riders who won 1st place Western Mounted/Horse Drawn entry in the parade.  They are a wonderful group of people and I enjoyed getting to meet them and appreciate being included in this historic event.

I also attended the National Professional Bull Riders Challenge that evening.  I enjoyed meeting their event Committee and volunteers along with many of the great people of Bandera.  It was especially nice to run into the Perry family, who have been lifelong friends of my family.  Thanks for coming out to see me!

25th Annual National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration, Lubbock

One of the wonderful things that I get to do as Miss Rodeo Texas – is travel this amazing state of ours and experience all the unique and wonderful things that it has to offer!  This time I had the pleasure of traveling out West to Lubbock for the Annual National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration.   I have been to some wonderful western events before but Lubbock really does an outstanding job of educating the youth and supporting our Western Heritage.  From Cowboy Poetry, to Western Art, Western Musicians to Chuck wagon cook offs and Native American Tee Pees to equine demonstrations with Craig Cameron…. The Cowboy Symposium covered it all!

Touring the Symposium with this class of elementary students was an adventure!

Touring the Symposium with this class of elementary students was an adventure!

One of the highlights of my visit was the opportunity to join some of the elementary classes as they took their tours.  Kids are so honest, blunt and funny!  One little girl named Kinley especially touched my heart and made my day.  Days like this are confirmation that what we do and who we are as Rodeo Queens and Role models is still important and we can make a difference in the future of the sport and lifestyle that we all love.

My new friend Kinley totally made my day!

My new friend Kinley totally made my day!

In addition to the children’s awards, I had the honor of assisting with the American Cowboy Culture Awards.  The King Ranch, Waddie Mitchell and the PRCA represented by Karl Stressman were just a few of this year’s recipients.  I was also surprised by Mr. Alvin Davis (one of the founders of the Lubbock Symposium) when he awarded me with the “Head of the Class Award”.  Such an honor!    I would like to personally thank Ms. Monica Hightower, Mr. Alvin Davis and his family for their hospitality during my stay in Lubbock.  Thank you for making me feel at home and taking care of me like one of your family!

I was very happy to see our MRT Princess, Kate Johnson at the Parade and have her join me for the children’s award ceremony.  Kate is doing a fabulous job as MRT Princess in her quest to make 52 appearances during her year.  Thanks to Melissa for taking pictures of us! The whole Johnson family has been a wonderful extended family for me and I always love to see them.  I truly appreciate that they are the first ones to jump in to help whenever I (or anyone else) need them!  Once again, it’s all about the people we meet and relationships we build along the way that build a life and make the memories!

Parade with MRT Princess Kate Johnson.

I highly recommend that you check out the Lubbock Cowboy Symposium website at www.cowboy.org to see everything you missed and make plans to attend next year! If you love Cowboys, BBQ, Rodeo, Horses and the Western way of life…… You will love it!

The future of Western heritage and rodeo is looking CUTE!

Holding the future of Western heritage and rodeo and I think it is looking CUTE!

Thank you for continuing to follow this blog as well as following Hannah, Kate and I on Facebook.  I hope that somehow it allows you to feel like you are a part of our team and on this journey with me, because in a very real way – you are! I couldn’t do any of this without the amazing support, kind words of encouragement and the “Texas Love” that I receive from my friends, family, our wonderful sponsors and the supporters of the Miss Rodeo Texas Organization.  Texas is my family and no matter where I go, I know that “Deep in the Heart of Texas” will always be home!
