Helotes, Home of the “Cornival”

Helotes, Texas is home of the “Cornival” and great Rodeo Fun!

Parade

Every great rodeo weekend kicks off with a parade!

What a great weekend it was in the beautiful town of Helotes!  I always love running into familiar faces and this weekend was filled with them!!!  I may not have grown up in this area, but I have made some amazing friends and “Rodeo Family” so it felt like home but nothing makes you feel more welcome than a sign with your name on it and a parking space reserved just for you! Thanks to Ms. Kim and the Helotes Rodeo Committee for taking such good care of me!

This was so cool to drive up and see!  Thanks Helotes Rodeo!

I’ve had the honor to work with some amazing people in the rodeo industry this year and it was so cool to run into two of the best in Helotes.  Mr. Mike Mathis who announces the entire rodeo on horseback and Mr. Ben Benavides who gives rodeo fans some of the best music around.  These two professionals led an amazing team through an exciting rodeo weekend filled with unique things like Sumo wrestling and all the corn you could eat!  A special memory for me this weekend was getting to see Michael Perry and his Family. His dad and my mom grew up together and our families have been long time friends and they’ve recently relocated to Texas.  Michael has had a lot of success as a Tie Down roper in high school as well as college but I know he will be in the Texas lineup at the WNFR grand entry some day soon, so keep looking for this cowboy’s name.

Steph and little girl

Here in Texas, we have so many beautiful spring rodeos to choose from that we are truly blessed!  I hope to see YOU at one soon~  Stephanie Revels, your Miss Rodeo Texas

Rodeo, Sand and Surf… You Gotta Love Texas!

Buc Days Rodeo ~ Corpus Christi, Texas

Steph w Mutton Buster at Corpus

Before the rodeo got underway we had fun at the Buc Days Mutton Bustin’

I think that most of my favorite memories during my year as Miss Rodeo Texas are when I am working with the kids.  I love that rodeos everywhere invest into the future of the sport by including events and opportunities for children and youth to see what rodeo is all about.  It makes me extremely proud to be involved in rodeo today as well as to support what it will become tomorrow and as we say… “LONG LIVE COWBOYS!”

One of the great “give-backs” that Buc Days puts on, is the Rodeo School for kids.  It was so much fun to be a part of this event, share our love of rodeo with students from the Corpus Schools and have a blast with this crazy crew while doing it.

Thanks to Mr. Barry who gave Paige and I a tour of the Rodeo grounds, Corpus area as well as treating us to a fabulous lunch and tickets to the Corpus Aquarium.  It was an awesome experience and something that we don’t normally get to do on our rodeo travels. I think my favorite had to be the dolphins, but this turtle was a pretty close second!

Queens and Dolphins

Paige and I loved the trip to the Aquarium!

Queens with Sharks

This goes back to the original meaning of “SHARK TANK”!

While attending the Corpus Buc Days Rodeo I was blessed to have carried our American flag, help with the mutton bustin’, and push cattle out of the arena.  I always love the opportunity to help the rodeo committees any way I can and be a hand.  Once again I have met some of the most amazing people (Texas is filled with them) and I’ve added to my “Rodeo Family” again.  I was also able to reunite with some of the rodeo family I’ve met during my year but one extra special moment for me was when I got to see a little girl that I had the honor of meeting during the San Antonio Rodeo.  Her excitement of seeing me again just made my heart melt and is a reminder of why we do what we do!  I will carry that memory with me as I move forward in my life even after being Miss Rodeo Texas.  Who knows, maybe one day I will be able to run into her again as she proudly carries this coveted crown on her hat!  Either way, she and her sweet family were a blessing to me and as I pack up to go to the next rodeo I am still amazed that I get to live this life.

Quail Dobbs Memorial Kindergarten Rodeo

For those that knew the amazing Mr. Quail Dobbs, they are truly blessed and fortunate.  Now, if you were a kid growing up in Coahoma Texas you not only knew who Quail Dobbs was but you knew that being a part of his Kindergarten Rodeo was like a rite of passage into being a “Big KID”!  Mr. Dobbs brought the sport and his love for Rodeo to his home town of Coahoma and the Coahoma Elementary school 36 years ago and there was no better way to honor his memory than to carry on his legacy.

Every good rodeo starts with the posting of our flags!

At the World’s greatest Kindergarten Rodeo, the whole school gets together to watch the Kindergarten class put on their very own rodeo c0mplete with an announcer, pick up men, pivot setters, clowns and of course… rodeo queens!

My favorite part was during the Bronc Riding event.  After the “rider” was done, the “pick-up” man would ride out and pick the cowboy up and he would ride out on the back of his horse!  It was absolutely the cutest thing ever!  They also had a barrel racing event for the kids and they were kind enough to let Kate, Hannah and I take a turn.  We all gave it a good run, but those kindergarten kids are professionals and were hard to beat 😉  Ultimately it was truly an honor to be a part of something so special and unique, to celebrate Mr. Dobbs Legacy and experience the happiness that rodeo brings to people of all ages.

On behalf of Kate, Hannah and myself, Thank you to the Dobbs family and the Coahoma Elementary school!  Real horses – or Stick… the Quail Dobbs Memorial Coahoma Kindergarten Rodeo is definitely the REAL DEAL!
