Rodeo Austin – “Where Weird Meets Western”

10464414_966711633346765_8440503468039135221_nThe day after Rodeo Houston ended, I headed straight to Rodeo Austin for my sixth consecutive week of having a rodeo every day. When you represent the state with the most rodeos in the country, you tend to stay busy! I was excited to go back to Rodeo Austin since that is where my “rodeo queening career” began. I was Miss Rodeo Austin 2013 and held that title when I competed to become Miss Rodeo Texas 2014.

Once I got to Rodeo Austin, I was joined by Miss Rodeo Austin 2015, Chloe Costello, and Miss Rodeo Austin Princess 2015, Destinee Brown. I had so much fun spending time with these girls and really enjoyed getting to know them better. During the rodeo each night, we rode in to be introduced, helped with the Mutton Bustin’, rode in the barrel truck, and signed plenty of autographs afterwards.

In addition to the rodeo, I also got to go to a hospital visit with Team Rodeo Austin. The bullfighters, barrelman, Chloe, Destinee, and I went to the Dell Children’s Hospital where we got to interact with several amazing kids. We took pictures, signed autographs, colored and drew pictures together. I love getting to meet with these sweet patients and hopefully bring a little brightness to their day.

Thank you to Bucky Lamb, the CEO of Rodeo Austin, for letting me be a part of their rodeo and to Haley Luedke for scheduling my trip. It has always been a pleasure to work with both of you! Everyone at Rodeo Austin is like a family to me, all of your hard work and hospitality is greatly appreciated! I loved getting to go back to a rodeo that has played such a big role in my life and I look forward to the last few rodeos of my year as Miss Rodeo Texas!11174908_10155504954850437_8138569581534966913_n

Rodeo Houston

Rodeo Houston was definitely another amazing rodeo for the books! The morning after the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo ended, I headed East, straight for Houston. As soon as I got there, I met up with Miss Rodeo America 2015, Lauren Heaton. I hadn’t seen Lauren since the Miss Rodeo America pageant in December so I was so happy to see her again and excited for the three weeks ahead!10603354_966709510013644_2516495902967911485_n

Every day, Lauren and I got to kickoff each rodeo performance by leading the grand entry. We carried the American and Texas flags as rodeo personnel (all on horseback), carriages, wagons, and firetrucks followed us all the way around the largest arena I have ever been in!1380749_966728356678426_1978033928405210976_n

As soon as we got off of our horses after the grand entry, we headed upstairs to the Rodeo Houston Fan Zone. There, we signed autographs along with other rodeo contestants. It’s always neat for us to take pictures, sign autographs, and visit with fans. Once the rodeo was over, we were lucky enough to watch all of the amazing entertainers Rodeo Houston had from suites or right behind the chutes. One of the many perks of being a rodeo queen! 🙂17633_951863034831625_8554168616339016101_n

Rodeo Houston hosts their annual Armed Forces Appreciation Day and it was an honor to attend this year. Lauren and I were joined by other “rodeo royalty” as we signed autographs, took pictures, and spoke with visitors. I enjoyed getting to meet so many past and present service men and women, and participate in a day that honored them.1902880_966709303346998_4302326805953000189_n

I have to thank Lauren Heaton for being such a wonderful traveling partner during our three weeks in Houston. We had so much fun and I loved getting to spend time with her! Thank you to the Cervis for all of their help and hard work, along with Randy Britton, for lending us horses to ride every night. Thank you also to Joel Cowley, Catherine Schultz, and everyone else at Rodeo Houston for your hospitality. Y’all put on an outstanding rodeo and made it one of the most memorable trips for me.11027504_966711133346815_6226182936438060413_n

San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo

It’s difficult to even know where to begin when it comes to my time spent at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. I had such an incredible time at this rodeo and really loved all of the people I got to work with during my two and a half weeks there.

Opening day of the rodeo was filled with media all day long as several different TV stations filled the grounds to cover the event. I arrived at the grounds at 5:45 that morning and was honored to have the opportunity to interview with multiple stations until well into the afternoon. As a communications major, I appreciate these chances to promote and talk about rodeo while sharing my experiences with the public.

Once I was finished with media interviews, I went to production meeting before the first performance that night, as I would throughout the duration of the rodeo. These production meetings are basically a gathering of rodeo staff and contract personnel to go over each performance and make sure the whole production of the rodeo runs smoothly. I really enjoyed getting to attend these meetings because the room is filled with many iconic people in the rodeo industry and it gave me the opportunity to get to know everyone on a more personal level. It’s also neat to see how much goes into putting on each performance. Everyone works SO hard to make this the award winning 10-time Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year that it is.11002655_935130836504845_303208082335451542_n
Then, it was time for my favorite part of every day, the rodeo performance itself! I was sincerely honored to get to play a part in such a large rodeo as San Antonio. Each night, I carried a sponsor flag as I rode around the arena, leading the victory lap for the winner of each event. Cervi Championship Rodeo provided me with several awesome horses to ride and I can’t thank them enough for always being so kind
and helpful! Besides running sponsor flags, I also got to help with the Mutton Bustin’ at each performance! Getting to interact with the kids is always fun because you never know what they’re going to say or do. After each section, I got to help present the winning mutton buster with their shiny new buckle and even got some hugs out of the deal! Right after the rodeo ended each night, I made my way up to autograph signings alongside the rodeo contestants.

One morning, a few rodeo contestants and I went to visit a local children’s hospital with Ropin’ Dreams. These visits can be difficult because it’s hard to see precious kids having to stay in a hospital, but if there’s any way that we can brighten their day, even just a little bit, then that is time very well spent. Visits like these are one of the most meaningful things I get to do throughout my reign.10956825_10153160978420559_9193326233771213561_n

There were many other events I attended besides the rodeo itself. I went to the school tours every afternoon where I got to speak with many FFA and 4-H students that volunteer their time to guide young children around the grounds and share their passion for agriculture.  Every Sunday morning, I loved getting to go to Cowboy Church and sit alongside everyone I worked with at the rodeo. We got to listen to some great messages and “recharge” before starting another week of rodeo. I also went to the different livestock auctions where I witnessed some of the most incredible sponsors support these kids and their projects through record-breaking buys.10999104_10153138718785559_7067684568386241448_n

I am so grateful for every single person at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo for how wonderful and hospitable they were. I had a hard time leaving the rodeo at the end of the two and a half weeks because it had grown to feel like a family to me there. Thank you to Keith Martin for always being so supportive; with a leader like him, it’s no wonder this rodeo has been as successful as it has. Thank you to Sharron Arnold for taking such good care of me and to the marketing team, as well as the hospitality committee, for welcoming me into their offices. Thank you also to LeaAnn Gardner for all of the help and care she provided, I really enjoyed my time with her! I can’t thank all of the committees and staff enough for all of their hard work and kindness, I always felt right at home. I also appreciated getting to visit with Terry Chandler, Pat Bowen, Linda Ebest, Billy and Brenda Harris, many other Miss Rodeo Texas supporters, family, and friends. Every single one of you made this rodeo one to remember!
