National Cowgirl Hall Of Fame Spring Roundup – Montana

2015-05-14 16.11.12

Since the long winter and spring rodeos of Texas had kept me busy since the start of 2015, I had not been out of state since the Miss Rodeo America pageant in Las Vegas this past December. However, the third weekend of May, I had the opportunity to travel to the beautiful state of Montana! I was honored to join many other women from across the world for the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame Spring Roundup, held at the Paws Up Resort.

11295851_10153355077815559_6029704984675463272_nThe Cowgirl Spring Roundup is a full weekend dedicated to embracing “cowgirl culture” and the Western way of life. As soon as I landed in Missoula, I was picked up by a Paws Up shuttle and taken to the beautiful resort. Once I arrived, I went straight to our first event of the weekend, a mounted shooting exhibition at the resort’s equestrian center. It was amazing to see the horses and their riders work together to shoot every single balloon that they ran past. Talk about teamwork! After that, we all had a wonderful dinner as we introduced ourselves and got to know everyone that we would be spending the weekend with.

2015-05-15 10.47.06Throughout the rest of the weekend, five National Cowgirl Hall of Fame Honorees led us through different activities that they each specialize in so that we could learn from the best of the best! My first full day in Montana started off with an early morning photography workshop taught by the award-winning photographer, Barbara Van Cleve.11159949_10153352777400559_5442930048876825535_n She shared some of her tips and tricks while showing us examples of some of her own work. I have to say, she has taken some of the most beautiful photos I have ever seen! Later that morning, we went on a cattle drive with champion cutting-horse rider, Barbara Schulte. I loved getting to spend the morning horseback, working cows, and taking in the gorgeous Montana landscape.

11263131_10153352777270559_8363613003267487323_nLater that day, we joined the amazing trick rider and roper, Audrey O’Brien Griffin, for an afternoon of roping. We were each given our own roping gloves and pink rope, which I just love! This was one of my favorite activities of the trip because it reminded me of my dad teaching me how to rope when I was younger and all of the nights I spent in our arena while he and his friends were team roping. At the roundup, we all took turns roping the steer dummy and after catching every loop I threw, I was surprised that I still had the hang of it after so many years! I think I may just want to pick up roping again!

The next day began with a morning trail ride alongside Sunny Hale, the highest-ranked 2015-05-16 10.30.34woman polo player in the U.S. There was a very light rain that day as we rode which actually made for a really relaxing morning. 2015-05-16 11.16.40It was a beautiful ride spent visiting with the other women and being surrounded by some of the prettiest scenery you’ll ever see. That afternoon, we took a drawing class with the incredible artist, Donna Howell-Sickles. I can’t say that art is my forte, but I am still amazed with how gifted and talented Donna is with her work.

11053607_10153355033245559_6765915818930466919_nEach night, we had an amazing dinner together with all of the honorees. The Resort at Paws Up provided some of the best meals I’ve ever had and I enjoyed getting to spend the evenings with the other women, sharing how our busy days had been. The whole weekend was such a great experience, getting to participate in activities that I love while getting to know women from different places and walks of life. We all came together not only from across the country, but even from across the world! One young lady traveled all the way from Germany because she read a book about what it means to be a cowgirl and wanted to experience it for herself. How neat is that?! I literally had goosebumps when she told us her story.

2015-05-18 11.41.02This was such an incredible trip and it would not have been possible without the help of some pretty incredible women. First and foremost, thank you to Marjorie Murphy for sending me to the Cowgirl Spring Roundup. I really appreciate everything that you do for me and the time you spent planning this trip. Thank you also to Nadine Larson for your hospitality, it is second to none and I so enjoyed visiting with you! Nadine was actually one of my judges when I competed to become Miss Rodeo Texas. She owns the beautiful Resort at Paws Up and teamed up with the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame to put on the Cowgirl Spring Roundup. I would also like to thank my cabin roommates, Melissa and Susan, for being so sweet and fun to be around. And last but not least, thank you to everyone at the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame for all of their hard work and putting this wonderful event together!

God Bless,

Helotes Cornyval and Rodeo

11188464_976893775661884_9058858808037216325_n“Where The Hill Country Begins” is the promotional phrase used by the Helotes Cornyval and Rodeo. As a girl that grew up in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, I was excited to be back in a familiar area that’s near and dear to my heart.11188200_927918313937789_5182552129720073473_nNot only was it a familiar area to me, the Helotes Rodeo was FILLED with many familiar faces that I was so happy to see! One in particular was Hayleigh Lansford. She is undoubtedly rodeo’s biggest fan and I have to say, I’m a big fan of this amazing lady myself. I have seen Hayleigh at rodeos across the country throughout my travels as Miss Rodeo Austin and Miss Rodeo Texas. It always brings me such joy to visit with her and her sweet family.

11205502_975874512430477_7134506450327094518_nThere were many other familiar faces at the Helotes Rodeo that I knew from working with at previous rodeos. Mike Mathis, who announces the whole rodeo from horseback and Ben Benavides, who provides all of the sound, put on a great show as usual. Stock contractor, Sammy Andrews, provided his award-winning stock and the pickup men let me borrow one of their horses to ride for the weekend. As if that’s not enough, I also got to visit again with the Cowgirl Chicks who are some of the sweetest and most talented young ladies. One of my favorite things about rodeo is that it’s such a closely intertwined community, I love getting to see some of the same people down the road!11196328_975876835763578_2104241631159934406_nDuring the rodeo, I got to ride in on a horse to be introduced, help with the mutton bustin’ and calf scramble, and sign autographs with the Cowgirl Chicks and rodeo contestants afterwards. One morning before the rodeo, I was honored to be a part of the Special Kids Rodeo. Many kids came to the rodeo grounds for a fun-filled day of riding horses, roping, face painting, and dancing. I just love getting to see them smile and have fun while enjoying our Western heritage. I couldn’t agree more when Winston Churchill said “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” Moments like these Special Kids Rodeos make that completely evident.

The next day, I rode in the Cornyval parade with the Helotes Rodeo Committee. They chose a “Redneck Yacht Club” theme for their float so I traded in my horse for a jet ski. That was a first! As we rode through town, it was great to see so many people lined up to watch the parade and support the Helotes Cornyval.

I would like to thank everyone at the Helotes Rodeo for such a great trip! The rodeo committee provided such amazing hospitality and I really appreciate it. Thank you also to the pickup men for providing a great horse for me to ride and all of the contract personnel for being such a pleasure to work with. Last but not least, a huge thank you to Kim and Brian Anderwald and their precious daughter, Kinslee, for all of their kindness and help during my stay.

Corpus Christi Buc Days Rodeo

11049605_974023612615567_6232627910286067801_nMy travels as Miss Rodeo Texas have taken me all across the great Lone Star state! From the Panhandle of Amarillo to the San Antonio Hill Country, I’ve covered a lot of Texas’ diverse landscape. However, Corpus Christi was my first trip to a beach this year and I had been looking forward to it!

549257_974023649282230_2650004121491534673_nI was so happy to be reunited with Miss Rodeo America, Lauren Heaton! After spending almost a month together at Rodeo Houston, Lauren has become one of my great friends and I was excited to be at another rodeo with her. While at the rodeo, Lauren and I were introduced before getting to help push out cattle during the timed events of each performance. That is one of my VERY favorite things to do at a rodeo because I love cow work and getting to be horseback for the entire rodeo. Thank you to Frontier Rodeo Company for providing us with great horses to ride each night!

After the rodeo was over, we headed upstairs to sign autographs alongside the bullfighters and barrelman, Keith Isley. We were also joined by Don Gay, the legendary 8 time PRCA World Champion Bull Rider! We had a great time visiting and and taking pictures with rodeo fans. In addition to the rodeo, Lauren and I got to participate in a radio interview with the local ESPN station to promote the Buc Days Rodeo. We were also honored to go on sponsor visits and thank the companies and individuals that make this rodeo possible.

Thank you to Bill Lathrop for showing us around Corpus Christi and always being so helpful! Thank you also to Don Gay, Frontier Rodeo Company, the pickup men, and everyone else at the Buc Days Rodeo for your help, unbelievable hospitality and kindness. What a fun rodeo to be a part of!
