The Adventure Begins

IMG_4925

My adventure began at The Mesquite Championship Rodeo in Mesquite Texas. With a dark arena, bright spotlights, and a rodeo ready crowd all awaiting the presentation of the American flag. As I sat there waiting for my signal to go in and present the American Flag for the very first time as the first lady of Texas rodeo. One of the directors tells me to hurry back and unsaddle my horse, because they need him in the chutes for the Bronc Ridding. IMG_4912Thankfully he was just joking and the horse couldn’t have been more of an angle! During the rodeo I was put to work pushing the steers and calves along side the pickup men. I was very fortunate to help the mutton busters behind the chutes, and they were all excited to tell me just how they were going to ride that sheep.

The Mesquite Championship Rodeo has a weekly TV show along with being broadcast live at every Saturday night performance. I was asked to join Joanna Huckabee (A former Miss Rodeo Texas) for an interview on the TV show. It was great getting to see Joanna and hearing about her experience as Miss Rodeo Texas.IMG_4917

From Mesquite I headed to the Marble Falls pro-rodeo. Marble Falls has never hosted Miss Rodeo Texas and everyone was just thrilled to have me there. Hawkeye was my trusty steed for this appearance. I am so thankful for his owner’s generosity and for hauling him all the way to the rodeo for a queen run.IMG_4971

IMG_4969Along with the rodeo performance I was asked to partake in the parade. I had so much fun visiting with the other floats and getting to know the people from Marble Falls.

The next stop was at the Daddy of E’m all the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. I had a jam-packed schedule from rodeo performances, parades, concerts, to the pancake breakfast. On my first day we woke up early for the parade downtown, which was one of the longest, and most exciting parades I have ever seen. All of us queens really got a good workout waving to everyone.

IMG_5024 The parade ended just in time for the rodeo performance to start where I got to make my famous Cheyenne Frontier Days fly by. It was such a rush being on a completely unknown horse flying down an old racetrack at full speed. Thank goodness the horse knew when to stop or else I would have gone around for another lap! After the rodeo was over all of us queens were able to attend the Alabama concert that night.

The next morning was even earlier as we prepared to flip some pancakes at the famous pancake breakfast. I put my cooking skills to the test, making pancakes and throwing them up in the air in hopes that a catcher would be there to catch them. We then ate and signed autographs for the audience members. IMG_5092After breakfast we proceeded to do some shopping in downtown Cheyenne. After our shopping spree it was again time for the rodeo. This time I got to visit with some of the major sponsors of the rodeo and even got to talk to one of the announcers who introduced me during the performance. By the end of the performance I had walked well over 4 miles! That night Toby Keith headlined the concert and it was a great way to end my experience at the Daddy of Em all.

After my big travel experience to Cheyenne I had the opportunity to head home for the West of the Pecos Cattle Women’s meeting. They asked me to be the guest speaker to talk about what it means to be a rodeo queen.IMG_5185

My next big stop was in Colorado Springs Colorado for the ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductions. The first event was the Cowboy Ball held in the Museum of the American Cowboy where I got to mingle with some of rodeos most elite. I also had the pleasure of meeting several other state rodeo queens whom I will see again in Las Vegas.IMG_5239The next morning was the induction ceremony where World Champion Cowboys Tom Nesmith, Mark Garrett, Bob Wegner and Harry Charters, along with rodeo notables Jack Hannum, the Hendricks Brothers specialty act and four-time team roping head horse of the year Precious Speck (Walt) were all inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. IMG_5248That night I attended the Douglas Country Fair and Rodeo. Where I meet several Colorado girls who dreamed of becoming Miss Rodeo Colorado, as well as a very excited rodeo crowd who all wanted to know what it was like to be a rodeo queen from Texas. It was an amazing experience filled with good people and good times.

A wonderful sponsor of Miss Rodeo Texas is the South Texas Cattle Women who invited me to attend their first of the year meeting. As their guest speaker they wanted to know a little bit about myself as well as all of my travels. It was a great experience getting to meet all of the inspirational women behind this organization. This was a special appearance because Miss Rodeo Texas Teen Sissy Winn was also in attendance, and it was our first time together since the pageant! IMG_5311

This is just the beginning and I am so excited to see what the next adventure has in store. Stay toned for more adventures!

Getting to know the New Miss Rodeo Texas

imageHi Everyone for my first blog post as your new Miss Rodeo Texas (and my first blog ever!) I’d like to let you all know a little bit more about myself and then we can dive into all the wonderful adventures as the First Lady of Texas Rodeo.

I’m from the small west Texas town of Alpine, where I grew up on a ranch with two older brothers, my parents, and many critters. I don’t ever remember learning to ride a horse, it just seemed like natural progression, and the rest is history!

I began to rodeo when I was in junior high school, when I decided I needed more speed from my horse. My need for speed was met as I competed in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and breakaway roping. I competed well on through high school and qualified for state in pole bending and goat tying.

I recently graduated from Texas Christian University with a degree in Communication Studies with a Buisness emphasis and minors in Energy Technolgy Managment and Sociology. I’m a fifth generation rancher and have plans to continue in the agricultural field. I am so thankful to have been raised in this life style with the values and tradition instilled of our western way of life. It is my hope as Miss Rodeo Texas to inspire the younger generation to engage in agriculture.

Stay tuned for new blog posts from my travels to Wyoming, Colorado, and of course Texas!

Brown County Fair and Rodeo ~ Brownwood

IMG_9701The first weekend of June, I headed north to Brownwood for one of my last trips as Miss Rodeo Texas. It was a wonderful weekend filled with friendly people, beautiful weather, and some great rodeo action!

IMG_9760

This rodeo kept me busy and was so much fun to be a part of! The performance started IMG_9754as most rodeos do, with the grand entry, national anthem, and prayer; one of the many reasons why I LOVE this sport. After that, I was introduced along with the Brown County Rodeo Queen , Emily, and any other visiting royalty at the rodeo. Throughout the performance, we ran sponsor flags and pushed cattle out during the timed events. Getting to be horseback for the entire rodeo is one of my very favorite things! At the end of the rodeo, we would go meet with the crowd to sign autographs and take pictures.

IMG_9679In addition to being a part of the rodeo, Emily and I also got to participate in many promotional events throughout the Brownwood community. Our first stop was at a local radio station. We were joined by the the Lone Star Cowgirls, announcer, TC Long, barrelman, Ronald Burton, stock contractor, James Andrews, and the pickup men. We all put our rodeo knowledge to the test in an on-air, boys against girls, rodeo trivia game. The good news is that the girls’ team won!! The bad news is that the questions may have been skewed specifically for that outcome… Regardless, both teams did a great job! Next, we headed to a school, nursing home, and the Boys and Girls Club to talk about the rodeo and answer questions. I always enjoy getting to share my passion for this way of life while getting to know new people. I was especially impressed by how genuinely interested the children at the Boys and Girls Club were in IMG_9682learning about rodeo, horses, and even our own life stories. An entire room full of kids quietly listened as we spoke and answered their questions. After we finished answering questions, they wanted to take pictures and have autographs signed, even asking for us to sign their clothes! (I hope there aren’t some angry Brownwood moms while they’re doing their kids’ laundry :/) Overall, it was such a good day. I have been so blessed this year to be in a position where I get to know and spend time with new people all over the country!

IMG_9734There were many people that made my trip to Brownwood such a great experience! I can’t thank the Florence family enough for bringing their horse for me to ride each night and helping with anything I needed. Thank y’all for all of your hard work! Thank you also to Anna Hernandez and Brent Moseley for being my contacts throughout my stay in Brownwood. I really appreciate each of them helping and guiding me throughout the weekend. I would also like to thank the rest of the Brown County Rodeo Committee for being so friendly and hospitable. Y’all made Brownwood such a fun rodeo!
